Why do developers always start panicking when you ask them for an estimate?

Being an ex-developer myself I know what the pressure is like what asked for an estimate. But in my book an estimate isn’t a promise, It’s just an estimate based on the knowledge at that time.

The exact definition is:

roughly calculate or judge the value, number, quantity, or extent of.

I don’t want a made up figure. In fact, on the contrary, I want them to think it through carefully first and help them do it.

Its only a yardstick not a hangman’s noose. At least in my book that’s what it is. 😉

[Had to write this to get this off my chest as we’re looking for PHP Developer freelancers at the moment].
