Thin Metal Films Ltd is a precision thin film coating company offering a manufacturing service for a range of contract optical coatings, covering wavelengths from the ultra violet to the infrared.

We have over 30 years’ experience in the application and development of thin film vacuum technologies for advanced optical products.

We are looking for a Materials Scientist / R&D Coating Engineer (or more experienced for higher pay grade) to get involved in our exciting R&D programs for novel applications and our range of contract Optical coatings who will grow with the company.

You will work in our dedicated cleanroom and operate with other staff our range of vacuum coating chambers - depositing high performance multi-layer thin film PVD coatings onto optical components.

The desired candidate should have some previous PVD experience in e-beam, thermal evaporation and/or magnetron sputtering. Good experience with a range of analytical equipment eg: spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, XRF, dektak profilometry etc would also be desirable You will have a good knowledge of solid state physics and materials science with a strong interest in optics and analytical systems.

  • Minimum MSc or PhD in preferably Physics, Materials Science, Optics related, or Nanotech.
  • Attention to detail and ability to solve complex problems a prerequisite
  • Some hands-on experience in conventional PVD thin film deposition technologies (thermal and electron beam evaporation, sputtering).
  • You should possess a good understanding of the physics and practical mechanics of PVD.
  • An ability to progress R&D projects and want to improve processes and will lead to rapid promotion.
  • Experience in characterization of thin film coating performance an advantage
  • Keen and able to meet deadlines and work in a production environment
  • Quick to pick up and learn new procedures.
  • Able to plan work, carry out background reading / research and maintain records.
  • Good communication skills.
  • This position is based at our Production facility in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
