What you can add:
- Support patients to maintain their interests, identity, appearance, emotional and physical well-being whilst receiving various forms of care, observing and reporting any changes to the nurse in charge. Promote and support patients/clients rights, beliefs and choices whilst on the ward/department, taking into account issues of diversity and cultural needs.
- To provide personal care to patients in accordance with their individualised care plan in a respectful manner, showing proper regard to their right to privacy and dignity.
- Provide input to care plan discussions with a qualified practitioner where requested, using knowledge of patient and environment.
- Under direction and agreement of a qualified practitioner the post holder will independently undertake escort duty with patients, including where the patients have been risk assessed or might present with more complex needs. This may include high risk escorts for patients in Secure Services (where applicable).
- To carry out duties as allocated by a qualified practitioner. Engage with patients to undertake activities, following the care plan. Supervise one to one and straight forward group sessions. Required to use own initiative and decision making in the planning and delivery of some basic activities.
- Where applicable, and with appropriate training/refresher training, undertake and record clinical observations (which may include: temperature, pulse, blood pressure, blood glucose, weight, input/output of diet and fluids etc) as required and instructed, with access to supervision from a qualified member of staff. Recording the observations accordingly and escalating any concerns to a qualified practitioner as appropriate.
- Establish and maintain effective and appropriate relationships with patients, their carers, relatives, friends and other members of staff. Use verbal and non-verbal skills to overcome communication barriers presented by patients due to their mental health or learning disability needs. Report any change or unusual occurrence in an individuals behaviour or condition to the registered nurse.
The role will involve, but not be limited to you performing the above.
What you’ll need:
Qualifications :-
- Care Certificate or able to work towards obtaining this
- Health and Social Care Apprenticeship to level 3/equivalent experience or able to work towards obtaining this
- Care Certificate
- H&SC Apprenticeship Level 2
- British Sign Language Level 2 Certificate or able to work towards obtaining this *
Experience:-
- Previous experience working in a clinical/care setting with people with Mental Health or Learning Disabilities
- Experience of either working in a care environment or having caring responsibilities in personal life
- Experience of working or interacting with diverse groups of people
- Experience of being able to organise, plan and prioritise own work/time
- Experience of using IT systems
- Experience of using electronic patient notes and records
Knowledge:-
- Awareness of Mental Health and Mental Illness, its effects on the individual, family and friends
- Awareness of the effects of illicit drug use
- Awareness of the Mental Health Act
- Willingness to undertake & complete PMVA training and engage in techniques as required
- Understanding of emotional intelligence and reflective practice
- Awareness of safeguarding considerations regarding children and vulnerable adults
- Awareness of Trauma-Informed principle.
- Depending on the Trust, you may require variable additional certification and skills.

The job holder must be assessed by Occupational Health as having a level of fitness to carry out duties/tasks after reasonable adjustments under the terms of the Equality Act 2010 have been made. Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 - A Disclosure will be requested for this in the event of a successful application.
