Job Purpose:
The overall aim of providing high quality residential, educational and training programmes for children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Asperger’s Syndrome and/or Learning Disabilities, and their families. The main roles involved in this post are:
HOURS: You will be expected to work the hours required to perform your professional duties, which you will effectively co-ordinate between your direct classroom commitments and additional responsibilities - on a pro-rata basis.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- To provide high quality teaching and learning opportunities with in an allocated subject area.
- To maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of developments in meeting the needs of pupils with autism and special educational needs
- To maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the teaching of all curriculum subjects and take account of wider developments which are relevant to your work
- To plan lessons and activities and sequences of lessons to meet pupils’ individual learning needs
- Planning and managing associated resources / teaching materials, teaching programmes, courses of study, methods of teaching and assessment
- To do all you can to ensure that, as a result of your teaching, your pupils achieve well relative to their prior attainment
- To take responsibility for a class or group of pupils as required by senior staff
- To set challenging but achievable goals for pupils through their Individual Education Plans using detailed baseline information as established through thorough assessment
- To take responsibility for your own professional development and use the outcomes to improve your teaching and your pupils’ learning
- To provide detailed reports for parents and others as required
- To lead and manage a team of Teaching Assistants effectively

- To have a secure knowledge and understanding of the scope, structure, balance and content of an appropriate school curriculum for our pupils.
- To plan teaching to achieve progression in pupils’ learning and which takes account of pupils’ learning needs and holistic development
- To provide structured learning opportunities through good curriculum planning and effective classroom management.
- To ensure that all pupils are working towards their agreed accreditations.
- To use a variety of teaching approaches and activities to develop pupils’ learning through planned interventions and independent learning opportunities both within the school environment and inclusive community contexts.
- To support and contribute to the school’s total communication approach.
- To offer teaching opportunities, which give, concrete learning experiences.
- To evaluate own teaching critically to improve effectiveness.
- To maintain effective partnerships with parent/carers to promote pupils’ learning and to provide information to parents about targets, achievements and progress.
- To provide detailed plans for your teaching, ensuring that each session has clear objectives and planned activities to enhance learning and develop pupils’ key skills
- To produce quality displays around the school and ensure that they are updated regularly.
- Create a climate which enables non-teaching staff to develop and maintain positive attitudes and confidence in supporting teaching of various subject areas.
- Support the Head of Education/Head Teacher to use data to analyse and interpret student achievement.
- Establish with the involvement of relevant staff, short, medium and long term plans for student progress.
- Complete a weekly plan and reflective log for all planned sessions.
- Monitor the progress made in achieving subject specific plans and targets.
- Provide guidance and support to all staff as appropriate
- Help establish and implement clear policies and practices for assessing, reporting and recording student achievement within all areas including work related learning/vocational studies.
- Develop effective links with external advisory services, other Pioneer Tecs colleagues and local community settings to enhance teaching and learning of pupils.
- Plan teaching to achieve progression in pupils’ learning, and which takes account of pupils’ learning needs and holistic development.
- Provide structured learning opportunities through good curriculum planning and effective classroom management.
- Ensure that all pupils are working towards their agreed accreditations.
- Use a variety of teaching approaches and activities to develop pupils’ learning through planned interventions and independent learning opportunities both within the school environment and inclusive community contexts.
- Offer teaching opportunities, which give, concrete learning experiences.
- Evaluate own teaching critically to improve effectiveness.
- Help produce quality displays around the school and ensure that they are updated regularly.
- Photographically record all pupils progress, where written documentation cannot be completed by the pupils.
- Maintain a creative celebration of pupils across the school environment. This may also mean being responsible for overseeing the displays created by other teachers.
- Set up and develop the use of Progress/Evidence Files that record pupils’ achievement.
- To develop effective liaison with school’s residential, clinical team and external agencies, to ensure maximum support, holistic approaches are in place to support progression in learning.
- To provide written assessments and reports relating to pupils - this includes completion of Individual Education Plans, Review Reports, Assessments, and Portfolio’s of evidence to support accreditation.
- To promote and support inclusion arrangements for individual pupils as appropriate.
- To work collaboratively and flexibly with the schools Care and Education Team to ensure consistency of approaches within the context of providing ‘waking hours learning opportunities’.
- To work in close partnership with parents, families and advocates.
- To support pupils with their individual time-table/schedule.
- To play an active role in the development of communication systems for the pupils across all areas of their lives.
- To play an active role in supporting the pupils individual residential Key Worker team
TEAM MEMBER
To support the aims and development of the school, working effectively as a key member of the staff team.
- To participate in the full range of meetings, as directed by your manager;
- To participate in arrangements for monitoring and appraising performance;
- To promote good order and discipline amongst students;
- To help maintain a safe and healthy working environment;
- To participate in the school’s cover arrangements both within your own class group and the wider school;
- To enhance own professional development, give feed back/information to staff;
- To offer support in organizing systems which promote the general welfare of students;
- To offer supervisory support to teaching assistants and relevant life skills staff;
- To maintain links with other specialist providers;
- To supervise students and voluntary helpers on placement

Essential:
- Qualified Teacher (QTS) or FE teaching Qualification

- Knowledge of developments for young people with ASC and/or Learning Disabilities
- Knowledge of Curriculum frameworks for school aged children
Desirable:
- Knowledge of a variety of learning and development skills applicable to young people with complex, severe learning difficulties and ASC
Experience
Essential:
- Experience of working with pupils who have learning difficulties
- Experience of working in a team
- Experience of liaising with parents and external agencies and facilitating their active involvement with the pupil
- Experience in assessing the needs of young people with SEN / ASC
- Experience working within a school
- Supporting pupils with challenging behaviour, personal care, and any other needs arising during the school day
