Role Overview

As the Head of Civil Design Engineering at Ethical Power, you will serve as the technical lead for civil engineering within the business, overseeing the entire civil engineering function. You will be responsible for guiding the strategic direction of the civil engineering team, ensuring that all designs meet the highest standards of safety, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with industry regulations. Your role will be instrumental in driving technical excellence across projects, particularly in the renewable energy sector, including solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and other clean energy initiatives.

What will you be doing?

• Provide strategic and technical leadership for all civil engineering activities across the business, ensuring best practices and continuous improvement of design standards and methodologies.
• Lead and mentor the Civil Engineering team, including the Civil Engineering Design Manager and Senior Civil Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and professional growth.
• Oversee and ensure the integrity of all civil and structural designs produced by the team, assuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements.
• Act as the senior technical point of contact for clients, regulatory authorities, and other key stakeholders. Ensure that civil engineering designs are well-coordinated with other disciplines, including electrical and mechanical engineering.
• Support project development teams with high-level civil engineering input during tendering and early-stage design. Guide the technical resolution of complex design challenges and ensure effective communication of engineering requirements across departments.
• Lead initiatives to enhance in-house civil engineering capabilities, including the adoption of new technologies and design methodologies. Identify and drive value engineering opportunities that optimize project cost, quality, and performance.
• Develop and manage systems for identifying and mitigating civil engineering risks in project design and delivery, particularly in areas of geotechnical and structural challenges.
• Work closely with the Operations and Construction teams to address real-time design issues on-site, provide input into construction methodologies, and participate in site visits to ensure successful project execution.

What are we looking for?

• Chartered Civil Engineer ideally in a similar role for renewables (especially solar and batteries)
• Senior position, leading a team of engineers, and being the main interface with Clients, consultants, DNOs, etc
• Deep knowledge of applicable regulations (Eurocodes, DNO/TO standards, CDM)
• Frequent visit to sites to oversee construction for quality and compliance with the design
• Swift turnaround of solutions, strong focus on deadlines
• Risk Management on the design phase according to CDM requirements
• Proficient use of CAD resources
