The future is quantum. Oxford Ionics is at the forefront of pioneering quantum computing, delivering world-leading innovation to create the most powerful, accurate, and reliable quantum systems. Quantum computing offers a radically new way of building computers that harnesses the power of quantum physics to outperform conventional supercomputers exponentially. Using our unique trapped-ion technology, we are leading the race to unleash quantum computing’s unparalleled potential.

What to expect:

We are at the forefront of pioneering the development of the first practical quantum computer. Our groundbreaking systems are based on ion traps, which confine individual atomic ions tens of microns above the surface of a chip. We design and build our systems in-house, integrating optomechanics, vacuum and cryogenic technologies, superconducting devices, vibration isolation, and magnetic shielding. We are dedicated to constant innovation and performance enhancement across each generation of devices.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be an integral part of our multidisciplinary team, supporting efforts to design, manufacture and construct our advanced trapped ion quantum systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to creating quantum computing infrastructure from the ground up, working closely with scientists, technicians and engineers to bring theoretical concepts into reality.

What you’ll be responsible for:

This role is designed for a mechanical engineer who thrives in innovative settings and is passionate about pushing the boundaries of quantum computing technology. By joining our team, you’ll contribute to a dynamic environment that values creativity, precision, and collaboration in the pursuit of transforming the future of computing.

You will support the end-to-end quantum system design process, from initial concept to manufacturing and assembly, including:

  • Design and Development: Support the 3D design process of quantum computing sub-systems and components, ensuring they meet scientific requirements. Prepare detailed 2D mechanical drawings and production specifications for manufacturing.
  • Manufacturing Coordination: Coordinate with external manufacturers to ensure the timely and quality production of quantum computing components.
  • Thermal Analysis and Problem-Solving: Conduct thermal analysis to optimise system performance and address any issues that arise, maintaining the mechanical integrity of our quantum systems.
  • Project Management: Support clear project goals, gather requirements, and help keep work on track. Contribute to iterative design and product development as requirements evolve. Communicate progress and updates effectively, ensuring stakeholders remain informed and engaged.
  • Innovation and Autonomy: Be comfortable working in new areas and possess an aptitude to learn new skills in order to support that work, managing your own time.

Requirements

You will need a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, whilst a master’s degree is preferable. You should have experience in mechanical design, with a focus on Design for Manufacturability (DfM) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles. Proficiency in CAD and CAE tools is essential, with a preference for SolidWorks and optomechanical design. A background in white paper design and development from minimal prior art, with a knowledge of how to move designs through to low-volume manufacture would also be valued.

Ideally, you will also bring a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, with proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and numerical modelling. This role also requires the ability to work independently while thriving in a multidisciplinary team. A passion for innovation will make you an excellent fit for this position, contributing to a collaborative and forward-thinking environment.

Benefits

Oxford Ionics is leading the way in quantum technology, and we need skilled, innovative individuals like you. We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, business stock options, uncapped annual leave, flexible working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more. Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.
