Overview
Within the company we are seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join our dynamic growing team. The Operations Manager will provide management and strategic oversight across the Transport, Site(s), and Maintenance departments, ensuring they operate efficiently, cost-effectively, and in alignment with the company’s strategic goals.
This role focuses on process optimisation, compliance, resource allocation, and cross-departmental coordination to drive operational excellence in skip hire and waste management services.
Responsibilities
Strategic Operations Management
- Develop and implement long-term operational strategies to enhance efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.
- Work closely with the Transport, Site, and Maintenance HOD to ensure cross-departmental collaboration and streamlined operations.
- Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to the senior leadership team to support business growth.
Financial & Resource Optimisation
- Monitor operational costs and identify areas for efficiency improvements, targeting cost reductions without compromising service quality.
- Oversee fleet, site, and maintenance budgets, ensuring financial targets are met.
- Lead capital investment planning for fleet expansion, site upgrades, and equipment investments.
- Ensure departments are suitably staffed and operating at optimal efficiency in all areas.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure full regulatory compliance with DVSA, Environment Agency, HSE, and other relevant authorities.
- Develop and maintain risk management protocols, focusing on health & safety, environmental impact, and operational risks.
- Conduct regular internal audits and performance reviews to ensure all departments meet legal and company standards.
Performance & Process Improvement
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for Transport, Site, and Maintenance teams, driving accountability and continuous improvement.
- Implement operational technology solutions to improve productivity.
- Champion lean operational practices, reducing inefficiencies and increasing service capacity.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Transport, Site, and Maintenance Heads of Departments, ensuring they have the tools and direction to drive their teams effectively.
- Foster a high-performance culture, promoting operational excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Work with HR to implement development and training programs for heads of departments.
Business Growth & Customer Focus
- Support new business opportunities by ensuring operations can scale to meet customer demand.
- Collaborate with the commercial manager to ensure operational capabilities align with business development goals.
- Enhance customer satisfaction and retention through operational efficiency and reliability.
Process Improvement & Cost Control
- Identify and implement efficiency improvements in fleet operations, site processing, and maintenance procedures.
- Monitor KPIs for transport, site, and maintenance teams, ensuring productivity and cost targets are met.
- Work with senior management to identify cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality.

Objectives & Key Results
Objective 1: Improve Overall Operational Efficiency & Cost Management
Key Results:
- Reduce operational costs through process improvements and better resource allocation.
- Increase fleet and site utilisation efficiency.
- Implement operational reporting to track KPIs across all departments.
Objective 2: Strengthen Compliance & Risk Management
Key Results:
- Achieve regulatory compliance in health & safety, waste management, and transport regulations.
Objective 3: Operational Planning & Site Management
Key Results:
- Ensure we meet our energy from waste (EfW) contractual obligations being zero to landfill by 2026.
- Implement a structured HGV & plant replacement program, ensuring an average fleet age below 5 years.
- Develop a 5-year site expansion and infrastructure improvement plan.
- Standardise operational processes across site(s), ensuring consistent service levels and efficiency improvements.
Qualifications
CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 4 Operator Competence for Hazardous Waste Treatment and Transfer (Required)
Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Road Haulage (Desirable)
IOSH, NEBOSH, SHEQ (Desirable)
Experience
Previous experience of managing people and being responsible across multiple sites, preferably within the waste industry.
