Role Overview
As the Compost Manager, you will oversee the operations of the Compost Facility, ensuring compliance with UK and EU regulations, including PAS 100, while driving efficiency and operational excellence. Your role includes leading a high-performing team, maintaining rigorous safety and environmental standards, and achieving key performance targets. As required, meet and liaise with regulating bodies, such as NRW and the Health and Safety Executive.
Maintain all required records and complete all the necessary audits.
To process and plan the composting operation, ensure the correct levels of bagged Compost are available, and develop market opportunities for feedstock and product sales.
Key Responsibilities/General Responsibilities
- Responsible for legal compliance of the Compost Department.
- Responsible for all health, safety, and environmental arrangements for the Compost department, ensuring all risk assessments, SSOW, and policies are implemented and adhered to across the department.
- Deliver all targets within set deadlines, ensuring that high safety and quality standards are never compromised.
- Lead and support the Compost team in meeting departmental standards and performance goals.
- Communicate and enforce company policies, ensuring all staff understand and comply with expectations.
- Build and maintain effective people management practices to inspire and develop the compost team.
- Collaborate with other department managers to ensure cohesive and aligned operations.
- Oversee the accurate and timely completion of all required documentation per company policies and procedures.
- Manage Compost budgets, ensuring all operations remain within financial constraints and achieve KPIs.
- Provide clear and consistent communication to the team regarding business updates, procedures, and expectations.
- Lead by example, always maintaining a positive, solution-focused approach.
- Optimise the operational and financial efficiency of the Compost.
- Embrace and develop the Leadership Charter with the overall business and Compost team.
Specific Responsibilities
- Technically Competent Person for Compost operations.
- Ensure compliance with Environmental Permit.
- Ensure compliance with the compost production Quality Management System.
- Carry out all environmental monitoring, sampling, and collection requirements to comply with Environmental Permit requirements.
- Monitor, record and adhere to PAS100 procedures and protocols.
- Compliance with the IVC and Food Reception building.
- Ensure staff compliance with the Employee Handbook, including all health and safety requirements.
- Regularly evaluate and confirm that health and safety arrangements are suitable and sufficient.
- Investigate and report all department accidents to the Head of Operations, Health and Safety Manager and HR Manager, identifying and addressing root causes.
- Ensure all team members fully understand and execute their responsibilities effectively.
- Maintain and monitor accurate equipment and vehicle maintenance records, promptly addressing anomalies.
- Identify and address any equipment or vehicle failures per company procedures.
- Monitor and process incoming organic material and compost products.
- Ensure sufficient supply to meet customer demand for Merlins Magic Compost.
- Monitor and manage all hardcore materials delivered to the site and processing to meet the necessary product specifications.
- Implement quality control measures to deliver consistent compost quality.
- Coordinate with the Transport Department to streamline external transport operations.
- Collaborate with the Engineering Department to ensure Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedules are adhered to, minimising disruption.
- Monitor and log fuel usage for all departmental machinery, ensuring accuracy and accountability.
- Ensure all Compost staff are adequately trained, maintaining an up-to-date training matrix for mandatory and role-specific requirements.
- Review and update Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) as necessary, implementing improvements where needed.
- Manage staff absences effectively, conducting Return-to-Work Interviews and maintaining attendance consistency.
- Oversee team and individual performance, providing feedback, coaching, and managing probationary reviews for new hires.
- Ensure all equipment settings are configured in line with company procedures.
- Work closely with the on-site recruitment agency to meet temporary staffing needs.
- Develop new markets for compost sales.
- Develop and deliver educational programs covering composting to the public, businesses, community groups and schools.
- Audit recording of all actions undertaken and by whom
- Monitor and control all biodiversity activities, such as the beehives.
- Monitor and control land management of the whole Nantycaws site, i.e. non-operational areas.
Key Skills and Qualifications
Essential
- Proven management experience, ideally in a Compost operation or production/processing environment.
- WAMITAB Level 4 in Open Windrow Composting or Anaerobic Composting.
- IOSH or NEBOSH qualification to support high-level safety management.
- ILM 5 - or willing to achieve, as part of the CWM management training program.
- Strong financial and budget management skills with a proven track record of achieving targets.
- Exceptional organisational and problem-solving skills for effective planning and adaptability.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire teams.
- Ability to manage team and individual performance with confidence and clarity.
- A proactive mindset with a sense of urgency to achieve results.
- Dependable, with a strong commitment to upholding company values and standards.
Desirable
- Experience within the recycling or materials processing industry.
- NEBOSH Environmental, or willing to achieve.
- Experience with PAS 100 composting.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: £35,000.00-£38,000.00 per year
