About Us:
We are a small company with multiple websites powered by a bespoke tech stack. Our primary business areas are b2c and b2b media in the games industry and accompanying conferences. We currently maintain 12 websites that serve gamers, games industry professionals, and event attendees. We’re seeking a skilled and versatile professional to oversee our technological infrastructure and operations, with a focus on back-end development and support.
Overview:
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and evolving our technological environment to efficiently deliver websites and internal tools that fulfil our business objectives for 2024 and beyond. This person will primarily work alone and have a great deal of autonomy in delivery but report to the creative director and senior team, with support from other departments as necessary.
You’ll be aware of modern technology and methodologies and have a realistic and commercial approach when advising and deciding on what to use for any given task or scenario. While knowledgeable and experienced in frameworks and third-party tools, you will ultimately excel at producing your own code and building solutions to problems using raw fundamental PHP, rather than needing or preferring to rely solely on ready-made off-the-shelf options. You desire to build your own work and understand intimately every line of code that goes into a project.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Maintain working health of core websites
- Evolve and develop sites as briefed
- Build principles and best practices for SEO across all sites
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Oversee all aspects of our tech infrastructure and development tasks
2. Support existing sites and tools while developing new features
3. Be responsible for planning and rolling out tech projects (e.g. website redesigns)
4. Design and develop APIs when needed
5. Manage server deployment, maintenance, health, traffic and decommissioning
6. Ensure software and service updates, security, and data backup
7. Respond to critical system failures within agreed-upon timeframes
8. Be the first point of contact for company questions about the systems, errors and updates
Additional Activities:
- Manage documentation
- Implement and organise task automation
- Research and integrate new technologies and best practices
- Collaborate with various company departments to address tech needs and identify efficiency opportunities and new ideas
- Provide regular status updates to company directors
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of five years of commercial experience
- Familiarity with full-stack development
- You must be able to demonstrate vocational experience in:
- PHP OO / MVC framework concepts
- WordPress
- MySQL
- Javascript / jQuery / Ajax
- HTML / XHTML / HTML5
- CSS
- JSON
- XML / RSS
- You also need to have a working knowledge and be able to competently field questions regarding:
- Web standards (W3C)
- Cross-browser development (knowledge of browser differences and incompatibilities)
- Principles and best practice for SEO
- Strong understanding of server management and infrastructure
- Examples of sites and tools that you’ve built from the ground up
- Proficiency in capturing requirements and delivering projects
- Knowledge of security best practices and data backup strategies
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Strong communication skills for liaising with different departments
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Desirable Skills:
- API design and development
- Mobile app development
Work Setup:
- Full-time role
- Remote working: this is a remote role with occasional in-person meetings
- Open to remote candidates from anywhere within the UK
- Must be able to join calls during normal business hours
