Infrastructure & DevOps Engineer - £35,000/£70,000 per annum - Bury

Principal IT are working with an industry leading and award-winning managed technology provider that are looking for an infrastructure & DevOps Engineer to join their team. In this role you will play a vital part in supporting their future strategy. They are looking for someone who is passionate about continuous professional development and has an innovative approach to incorporating new technologies into their operations. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the forward-thinking IT team, undertaking certified and on premise training covering numerous systems and software.

I’m looking for a highly versatile engineer to take ownership of infrastructure, automation, and virtualisation. This role combines elements of DevOps, Infrastructure Engineering, and Virtualisation, making it ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment.

You will be responsible for managing and optimising the GPU server infrastructure, automating deployments, and ensuring high availability of our virtualised environments. You’ll work on Proxmox, cloud automation, networking, and DevOps pipelines to streamline operations.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Virtualisation

• Build, deploy, maintain, and optimise GPU-based virtualisation environments.
• Manage and scale GPU servers, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Oversee storage and networking configurations for virtualised workloads.
• Maintain and optimise backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
• Ensure security best practices are implemented across the infrastructure.

DevOps & Automation

• Develop and manage integration pipelines to automate deployments.
• Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or Ansible.
• Monitor and improve system performance using logging and observability tools.
• Work on automation solutions to streamline provisioning, scaling, and maintenance.
• Assist with containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes) where applicable.

Networking & System Administration

• Configure and maintain network infrastructure, including firewalls, VLANs, and VPNs.
• Troubleshoot networking and connectivity issues within the data centre.
• Manage and monitor system performance, ensuring uptime and stability.
• Perform system updates, patch management, and security hardening.

What We’re Looking For Essential Skills & Experience:

• Hands-on experience with Proxmox or similar hypervisor technologies.
• Strong knowledge of Linux administration (Ubuntu, Debian, etc.).
• Experience with automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - Terraform, Ansible, or similar.
• Familiarity with GPU servers and high-performance computing environments.
• Experience managing virtualised environments, storage, and networking.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-Have Skills (Bonus):

• Experience with containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, etc.).
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Exposure to monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK stack.
• Basic scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell.

The Package:

If successful our client is offering a salary between £35,000 - £70,000 per annum, favourable holiday allowance, company contributed pension scheme.
