The Executive Director and Co-CEO will co-lead Kakilang alongside the Artistic Director. This role is central to Kakilang’s strategic, financial, and operational leadership, ensuring the organisation’s long-term sustainability and creative excellence.

Kakilang is a pioneering arts organisation amplifying East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) voices through world-class interdisciplinary art. As a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) supported by Arts Council England, Kakilang is committed to innovation, community engagement, and fostering cultural representation.

Founded in 2005 and rebranded in 2022, Kakilang (formerly Chinese Arts Now) collaborates with leading institutions like the Barbican and Southbank Centre to deliver award-winning productions. The organisation also supports artist development and community-focused initiatives, ensuring ESEA voices are heard across the UK and internationally.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and ExperienceLeadership and Governance

  • Proven leadership experience at a senior level, ideally in the arts, cultural, or non-profit sectors.
  • Ability to develop and implement organisational strategies, ensuring alignment with artistic and financial objectives.
  • Experience working with Boards, including preparing reports, facilitating meetings, and contributing to governance practices.
  • Ability to lead Kakilang’s seasons, ensuring the smooth planning, coordination, and execution of events and productions.
  • Experience managing and reporting to funding bodies.

Financial Expertise

  • Strong ability to prepare and manage organisational budgets and management accounts.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial control, resource allocation, and compliance with regulations such as Company House requirements.
  • Experience in securing funding through grant applications, donor cultivation, and sponsorships.
  • Proficiency in financial software and advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel) and Google Sheets.
  • Knowledge of financial planning and reporting for publicly funded arts organisations.

Fundraising and Development

  • Demonstrated success in preparing funding applications and managing relationships with funding bodies, sponsors, and donors.
  • Ability to translate complex artistic visions into practical financial plans that align with organisational objectives.
  • Understanding of donor engagement, fundraising strategies, and income diversification.

Operational Management

  • Knowledge of employment law, human resources, and contracting practices.
  • Track record of managing day-to-day operations, including team recruitment, development, and performance management.
  • Familiarity with operational policies, including health and safety, and data protection.

Communication and Representation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse stakeholders, including funders, partners, and community groups.
  • Experience representing organisations in public forums, media engagements, and stakeholder meetings.

  • A genuine passion for promoting diversity, inclusion, and representation in the arts.
  • Understanding of the cultural and artistic contributions of ESEA communities in the UK and globally.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of the UK arts sector and established/ growing network.
  • The active interest in the UK arts and culture scene
  • Understanding of the arts funding landscape, particularly in ESEA arts.
  • Experience working in or managing interdisciplinary or international creative projects.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £40,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
