Job summary
To assist the theatre team in the management and delivery of all aspects of patient care needs and the implementation and evaluation of care within the operating theatres.
To assist with development and maintenance of safe and effective standards of care using research and evidence-based practice.
To participate in education within a positive learning environment and deputise for theatre sisters.
Main duties of the job
- To carry out clinical activities in accordance with unit policy.
- To act as a role model, offering leadership to co-ordinate, motivate and support team members.
- To assist in the implementation and monitoring of standards, participating in clinical procedures and taking any necessary action to promote safe and competent practice.
- To develop leadership skills to create a suitable and safe environment for a happy, efficient and coordinated team.
- To ensure theatre equipment is clean, in safe working order and adequately/appropriately stocked with supplies and pharmacy.
- To accept responsibility for the safe storage, checking, witnessing and administration of controlled drugs and medicines in accordance with unit policy.
- Maintain and record accurate and appropriate clinical records of patients’ treatment and condition.
- Identify clinical problems or needs and liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Anticipate and observe for possible complications of treatment.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating clinical skills; maintaining an up-to-date professional portfolio.
- Ensure department documentation is completed as required.
- Assist with control and requisition of supplies.
- To be cost aware and assist in critically examining practice and procedures.
- To be aware of and implement relevant guidelines associated with this sphere of nursing.
- To participate in the evaluation of new supplies and equipment.
- To participate in the appraisal system.
- To assist in reviewing and updating unit policies.
- Liaise with consultants and act in a co-operative and professional manner
- Actively participate in quality assurance audit.
- Attend and contribute to staff meetings.
- Assist with induction and training of new and temporary staff in accordance with unit policy.
- Promote a positive learning environment, sharing knowledge and encouraging application of research with the clinical environment.
- Participate in the strategic development of the unit through contribution to new practices and policy initiatives.
- Any other duties deemed suitable by the manager as appropriate to the role.
