Fleet Engineer

Salary – £45,000 – £48,000 per annum (plus benefits), depending on experience
Hours – 40 hours per week
Location – South East (based in Waltham Forest)

As a Fleet Engineer at FCC Environment, you will play a vital role in ensuring our national fleet of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and support vehicles is maintained to the highest standards. You’ll carry out inspections across various operational sites and advise on vehicle safety, compliance, and best practices. This role is essential to supporting our ongoing commitment to road safety, legal compliance, and operational efficiency.

This is a full-time position, working five days per week.

What will you be doing?

  • Conducting structured roadworthiness inspections of HGVs and supporting vehicles at FCC sites across the UK, including landfills, treatment plants, MRFs, transfer stations, HWRCs, and workshops
  • Taking responsibility for the implementation of the Group Health and Safety Policy in all vehicle-related activities across the Group
  • Compiling detailed inspection reports and presenting findings to the Head of Fleet and Plant, helping to drive continuous improvement and safety across the fleet
  • Monitoring and reviewing vehicle maintenance records and forward planners to ensure DVSA compliance and best practice standards are consistently met
  • Building positive working relationships with internal Workshop Managers and Transport Managers, providing technical advice and collaborating on improvements in vehicle safety and maintenance practices
  • Supporting site teams by delivering informal coaching to drivers and managers on daily checks, defect reporting, wheel security, and vehicle condition monitoring
  • Staying up to date with legislative changes and sharing knowledge with fleet and operational teams to ensure continued compliance and best value in vehicle operation
  • Investigating incidents where required and supporting corrective action plans to reduce future risks
  • Working flexibly and independently while travelling nationally, often requiring overnight stays

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Fleet Engineer with a strong background in HGV maintenance and compliance. You should be confident in your technical expertise and able to engage effectively with colleagues at all levels of the business.

Experience

  • Qualified to C&G; Level 3 or equivalent, with competence in all aspects of HGV repair and maintenance to recognised industry standards
  • HGV driving licence preferred
  • CPC qualification desirable but not essential
  • Experience with waste management vehicles and within the industry is desirable
  • Computer literate and proficient in using MS Word and MS Excel

Essential Knowledge

  • Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules
  • Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix
  • A full and comprehensive understanding of the Heavy Goods Vehicle Inspection Manual
  • Awareness of the licensing system for operators of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs)
  • Understanding of DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness – Commercial Goods Vehicles
