Retail Commercial Manager required (Energy Sector)

Location: Hybrid role, with travel required between locations across the Midlands and Basingstoke
Salary: £40,000 -£45,000 per annum, depending on experience
Holidays: 25 days per annum + bank holidays
Working Pattern: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

The Role:

We are looking for a Retail Commercial Manager to lead our commercial strategy, oversee pricing, and manage our product portfolio within the retail energy business. This role will allow you to shape our energy offerings, manage tariffs, and enhance customer experiences in a rapidly evolving industry.

The right candidate will have a strong commercial mindset, expertise in pricing strategies, and an understanding of market trends–along with a passion for making a real impact in the energy retail sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement commercial strategies aligned with retail objectives.
  • Analyse market trends, customer insights, and competitor activity to identify growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to set financial and operational targets.
  • Oversee product range to meet customer needs and brand standards.
  • Work with category managers to optimise product mix and monetise innovative energy products.
  • Maintain inventory control, balancing stock with sales forecasts and market demand.
  • Develop and manage pricing strategies for sales and profitability
  • Plan and execute promotions, seasonal campaigns, and special offers.
  • Monitor and analyse promotional effectiveness, adjusting tactics as needed.
  • Build partnerships with internal procurement teams and negotiate commercial offers.
  • Foster relationships with internal finance and marketing teams for cohesive retail offers.
  • Own commercial P&L and conduct financial reviews to ensure targets are met.
  • Track key metrics (sales, margin, turnover) and provide regular reports to senior management.
  • Drive improvements through data-driven recommendations and corrective actions.
  • Build relationships with internal analysts/category managers, promoting accountability and innovation.
  • Set clear performance goals and provide regular feedback to peers.
  • Promote collaboration across marketing, supply chain, and store operations.
  • Gather feedback from store managers and frontline teams on commercial activities.
  • Partner with marketing and store operations to ensure a seamless customer journey.
  • Use customer feedback to inform product and promotional decisions.
  • Stay updated on industry developments and retail best practices

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Business, Economics, Energy Management, or related field (MBA is a plus).
  • Experience in retail energy, utilities, or consumer goods, with a minimum of two years in a commercial or managerial role.
  • Proven expertise in pricing strategies, sales performance management, and product portfolio optimisation.
  • Strong understanding of energy market regulations, consumer trends, and competitor landscapes.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in financial modelling, data analysis, and market forecasting.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other analytical tools.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Highly organised and able to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail.
