Lead Electrical and Electronics Engineer
at ArmfieldAbout the job
At Armfield we design, build, and supply a wide range of innovative equipment for Educational organisations and the Food Technology industry. You’ll find our equipment in universities and laboratories all around the world.
Our educational equipment ranges from small bench-top apparatus for demonstrating engineering principles, to giant water flumes carrying thousands of litres of water over weirs and obstacles for ocean science research. Our Industrial Food Technology products bring together mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems, controlled by our custom software to provide our customers with the tools they need to develop their food production processes.
We’re looking for a skilled and experienced Electrical and Electronics Engineer to join our design team based at our home in Ringwood on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire. You will be leading our small team of Electronics Engineers and you’ll be responsible for the electrical and electronic design of our Education and Industrial Food Technology products.
Our ideal candidate will be experienced in working with PCBAs down to component level and able to lead fault-finding and diagnosis. You’ll also be a skilled electrical engineer, able to design electrical systems powering pumps, motors, heaters, chillers, and other devices in our products up to around ten kilowatts. You’ll be competent in specifying and selecting components, seeking cost-saving opportunities and producing documentation of the highest standard. The perfect candidate will be familiar with both PLCs and HMIs, as well as microprocessors typically used in embedded systems.
This is a big ask, and most candidates won’t be highly skilled in every area. We’re prepared to adjust the role for the right person so if you’re better with PLCs than embedded software, or more comfortable with PCBAs than with inverters, then don’t worry. What’s most important to us is that you’re methodical in your thinking, meticulous in your execution, and determined to be a great Engineer and help your team to thrive.
You’ll be working alongside Engineering Managers and Principals, and reporting to the Head of Engineering. We’re a small team at Armfield so you’ll be working closely with Engineers from other disciplines and with other departments around the business. We’ll train you on our products and processes, and you’ll need to travel to exhibitions, suppliers, and customer sites from time to time.
Your duties, subject to your specialist skills, will include…
- Leading the fault-finding and diagnosis of legacy PCBAs to component level and managing our suite of schematics, BOMs, and PCBA design files
- Designing electrical and electronic schematics for our products, and integrating mechanical devices such as pumps, motors and valves.
- Specifying and selecting components and suppliers suitable for our applications, and taking account of performance, reliability, quality, cost and obsolescence.
- Working across the full product lifecycle from idea and concept to detailed design, manufacturing, and supporting our customers after purchase.
- Sharing your knowledge, supporting other Engineers, leading design reviews and working within our design, engineering change, and project processes.
- Planning and documenting your work, and creating or updating technical manuals, test procedures, assembly instructions, and technical construction files.
To be brilliant in this role you’ll need…
- A relevant degree such as Electrical or Electronic Engineering and significant experience post-qualification. You might be an Incorporated or a Chartered Engineer and a member of a professional institute.
- Proficiency with design software such as SolidWorks Electrical, ePlan, and PCBA design tools. You’ll be able to handle complex designs and multiple product configurations in our PDM system.
- Project management experience including leading the technical aspect of projects. You’ll have a good understanding of project methodology, and preferably a project management qualification such as APM or PRINCE 2.
- Knowledge of Product Safety Directives, such as the machinery and low-voltage equipment directives, and understanding of the steps required to lead design reviews and demonstrate product compliance.
- Great communication skills, ability to work under pressure at times and with competing deadlines, and an enquiring mind that keeps on learning and innovating.
We take care of our people and we’ll give you all the tools and training you need to do your job. You’ll receive a competitive salary and company benefits, regular check-ins, a personal development plan, and a chance to make a real difference as a key member of our design team.
If you’d like to join the Armfield Team then please send us your CV and tell us about some of the projects you’ve been working on. If you fit the bill then we’ll ask to meet you online in the first instance, and then in person at our site in Ringwood.
