Be Part of the Future of Rail

The railway in Britain is undergoing its most significant transformation in a generation, and Rail Delivery Group (RDG) is at the heart of this change. With the creation of Great British Railways (GBR), we are driving a new era of simpler, smarter, and more accessible ticketing, revolutionising how millions of people travel.

Our Digital Ticketing Services (DTS) division leads industry-wide transformation in ticketing and payments, working to simplify rail travel through digital solutions. We collaborate with train operators, regulators, and technology providers to modernise ticketing, contactless travel, and retailing. DTS delivers programs and projects that improve ticketing systems, enhance customer experience, and ensure seamless integration across the rail industry.

About the Role

We are looking for a Project Manager to lead the successful delivery of an exciting national initiative: the Tap Converter project.

This Department for Transport-backed project will enable Local Transport Authorities (LTAs) to submit token-based tap data from Bus, Tram or Rail networks and receive accurate national rail fares in return. It’s a vital part of enabling seamless Pay As You Go travel across different authority boundaries.

RDG is proud to have been chosen to lead this innovation, and as Project Manager, you’ll act as the main point of contact for one of the participating LTAs. You’ll oversee the full project lifecycle, ensuring a coordinated, collaborative approach that delivers maximum benefit for passengers and the wider industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning what needs to be done, when, and by whom
  • Working collaboratively with suppliers and partners to clarify deliverables and timelines
  • Managing project risks, issues, and dependencies
  • Coordinating multiple internal and external teams
  • Ensuring timely delivery, within scope and to budget
  • Handling changes and planning contingencies
  • Liaising with RDG teams and external stakeholders across the transport and technology landscape
  • Ensuring the project delivers tangible benefits for customers and industry

Requirements

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a Project Manager who brings energy, curiosity, and a proactive mindset to project delivery. Someone who enjoys building strong relationships, thrives in collaborative environments, and is willing to dive into the details to understand the technologies that underpin success. An outgoing personality and a team-first attitude go a long way here, especially in a role that relies on coordinating across multiple organisations. This position is perfect for someone who’s confident managing suppliers, engaging stakeholders, and driving progress in a complex, real-world delivery landscape.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Experience delivering complex technical projects in line with a recognised delivery lifecycle
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Experience managing third-party suppliers and coordinating with internal teams including Technical, Test, and Service
  • Experience in project planning, reporting, and scheduling (both time and resource)
  • Ability to manage project scope, control change, and identify and mitigate risks

Benefits

Why Work for RDG?

We offer a highly competitive package, including:

  • 75% off rail travel for personal and family use, plus international rail discounts.
  • 30 days annual leave (plus buy/sell options and additional leave for key life events)
  • Season ticket loan for commuting costs.
  • Enhanced family leave – 30 weeks full pay for maternity, adoption, surrogacy, and shared parental leave.
  • Pension scheme – up to 11.58% employer contribution.
  • Private medical insurance (AXA PPP) including mental health and specialist care.
  • Discounted gym membership and access to wellbeing programmes.

Career Development & Progression

You’ll be part of a wider community of programme and project professionals at RDG, with opportunities to move into larger or more strategic programmes, or into line management or portfolio roles over time. The skills and relationships you build on this project will open doors across the industry.
